Solar Panel Grants Now Available for Rhondda Cynon Taf Homeowners

*Please note, new applications for the below scheme is now closed

If you live in Rhondda Cynon Taf and own your home, you could be eligible for a grant of up to £1,000 towards the cost of purchasing and installing solar panels. The scheme, led by the Council’s Heat & Save Team, aims to make homes more energy efficient, reduce carbon emissions, and help cut energy bills across the region.

What’s on Offer?

The Solar Panel Grant provides up to 25% of the total cost of a solar panel installation, capped at £1,000. The grant can be used to part-fund the purchase and installation of solar PV panels, which generate clean electricity by capturing energy from the sun – even on cloudy days.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, you must:

  • Own and live in a property located in Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Use an MCS-accredited installer (like Green Energy Solar)
  • Provide evidence of property ownership (e.g. mortgage documents or property deeds)
  • Supply a quote for the work at the time of application

You don’t need to be receiving benefits or meet any income thresholds. However, the grant cannot be used retrospectively, so you must wait for approval before any work starts.

Why Install Solar Panels?

Installing solar PV panels is one of the most effective ways to future-proof your home against rising energy costs and contribute to a more sustainable future. Thanks to advancements in technology, solar panels are now more efficient, more affordable, and more accessible than ever, especially with local grant support.

Here’s how they benefit you:

Lower Your Electricity Bills

Solar panels generate your own electricity from sunlight, meaning you can significantly reduce your reliance on the National Grid. On average, households can save hundreds of pounds per year on their energy bills, with even greater savings if you also install battery storage to use your solar power at night.

Work Even on Cloudy Days

You don’t need constant sunshine to benefit. Solar PV panels work using daylight, not heat, so they continue to generate electricity even on overcast days, which is ideal for the Welsh climate.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

By generating clean, renewable electricity at home, you’re directly reducing your household’s carbon emissions. This helps tackle climate change while also improving the environmental performance of your property.

Boost Your Property’s Energy Rating

Solar panel installations can improve your home’s EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating, making it more attractive to future buyers and potentially increasing its market value. It’s a smart, future-ready home upgrade.

Energy Independence and Resilience

With a solar system in place, you’re less exposed to fluctuations in electricity prices. Paired with a battery, solar panels can even power your home during outages or at night, giving you more control over your energy usage and costs.

Low Maintenance and Long Lifespan

Modern solar panels are highly durable and require minimal upkeep. Once installed, they typically last 25-30 years with very little maintenance, offering a long-term return on investment.

Compatible with Future Green Upgrades

If you’re considering other energy upgrades like EV chargers or heat pumps, solar panels are a great first step. They provide a cleaner power source for future home tech and can reduce the running costs of those systems too.

Important Notes for Applicants

  • The grant will remain open until funds are exhausted or until March 2026, whichever comes first.
  • MCS Certification is required for grant payment, but not at the application stage
  • The contract is between you and your chosen installer – not the Council
  • Funding is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis
  • The grant is only paid after the installation is complete and required paperwork (invoice, consent form, and MCS certificate) is submitted
  • The grant must be applied for and approved before installation takes place
