Solar Panel FAQs

Do you still have questions about installing solar panels on your commercial property?

Look below for some of the most frequent questions we are asked by new owners and commercial solar energy users.

On average, commercial solar panels cost between £15,000 – £70,000 for small to medium-sized businesses. The price depends on roof size, energy produced, and number of panels used.

Commercial solar panels are typically larger than residential ones. They average at 77 inches by 39 inches, compared to roughly 66 inches by 40 inches for residential panels. However, the size can vary depending on the specific needs of the business.

Manufacturers design commercial solar panels to last for a long time. Most companies guarantee their panels for 25 years. However, it’s important to note that the efficiency of solar panels slightly decreases each year. After 25 years, good solar panels will retain about 85-90% of their original efficiency.

The energy produced by a commercial solar panel depends on its size and the available sunlight. Most solar panels on today’s market usually produce between 250 and 400 Watts of power. A regular solar system with 30 panels can produce plenty of electricity each year to cover all your power needs. However, this can vary based on factors like shading, orientation, and sun hours.

The answer is, in most cases, no. In the UK, most commercial solar panel installations meet the requirements for Permitted Development. This means you can carry out certain building works and changes of use without having to make a planning application.

But there are restrictions on development rights to safeguard communities and local amenities from potential negative effects of specific projects. For example, there would be strict limits on any proposed solar projects around historic buildings like churches.

To qualify as permitted development, solar panels still have to meet certain conditions. Commercial solar panels on roofs or walls should not stick out more than 200mm from the surface. You must position the panels at least 1m away from the edges of both pitched and flat roofs. You should also place them at least 1m away from the wall joint they rest on.

It’s a good idea to learn about the rules and talk to your local planning authority. Staying informed is important, even if you don’t need permission. If you’re unsure, seeking guidance can be helpful.

This ensures your solar panel project follows local rules and avoids future problems. So, while planning permission may not be a hurdle, it’s always best to check and proceed with caution.
